Peter Nichol posted on Variables not shown in Website Development

I've had the same problem before, and it happened to me when I upgraded from PHP4 to PHP5.

Check how you're echoing your PHP values as I was using:

<meta name="keywords" content="<?=$keywords;?>" />

But since PHP5 it doesn't like the <?= so my code now looks like:

<meta name="keywords" content="<?php echo $keywords; ?>" />

And this now works fine. Try it out and let me know if still no such luck.

Peter Nichol posted on slow internet in Slow Computer

It's more likely that during all your downloads you managed to pick up a virus I'm afraid. I can't be sure, but it's worth running a few scans to check.

A free anti-virus solution would be AVG anti-virus. You can find this ant-virus package from www.download.com and then do a quick search for "AVG 8.5 free" and it should come up.

Hope this helps :)

Ok so a few days ago my website was fine.

Now none of my variables are being displayed from the database. The CMS I'm using pulls in the title, keywords and description from the database, as well as all the page content.

Now no content is being displayed and I'm not sure at what point the error occurs.

Peter Nichol posted on internet explorer in Website Development

Internet Explorer 6 and below often does have a lot of bugs when it comes to building websites, and often small CSS hacks can sort this.

For instance Internet Explorer does not follow the CSS box model yet, and also Internet Explorer 6 and below don't display png files correctly without a png fix for Internet Explorer.

I thought I had a png fix, but looking at Internet Explorer 6 - maybe I don't. I will add this file in later today.

Peter Nichol posted on PHP error - unexpected $end in Website Development

The unexpected $end error occurs when you have a function open.

Say you have an IF statement, you open the curly brackets {

You also need to remember to close the curly brackets }

Although it tells you the error is on 81, it might not be. Line 81 will be the last line of code, the IF statement, PHP switch, or function may be half way up your page.

Just go through and make sure they're all closed.

As for the include not working, take off the leading forward slash / and put the link as a relative link. If it still doesn't work then check the file to include has been uploaded to the correct directory.

I find that the box you type a reply into is a bit skinny. I don't know whether it's just me but I find it more difficult to review a post when you have all the scrolling going on.

I think it would also look tidier if the box were to be set centrally in the background and also if the box were wider it would use the space you have on the page more efficiently. Why cramp up if you have the space to spread out?

Yeh, there is the standard software, but I instinctively distrust the OEM when it comes to computing.

I've always been given the impression that the OEM software is often substandard to a utility built to compete with the OEM software

Adding a picture to your forum profile, ok.

Hover over the "Solutions Forum" link at the top and you will get some more links drop down.

From the drop down navigation you should see "Edit Profile", click here.

On the Edit Profile page you can add your date of birth, add a picture (click the browse button and find one on your computer to upload) and write a personal profile (if you wish to) and if you have your own website feel free to add that link in as well.

Hope this helps.

Peter Nichol posted on Disk cleanup??? in Slow Computer

I've never used a download option for disk cleanup before - although I'm not surprised there are some out there, and probably do a better job that what I personally do.

An alternative to downloading a disk cleanup application is also to use Windows built in disk cleanup option.

Go to "My Computer" and right click on the hard drive you want to run the disk cleanup on (usually your primary Hard Drive, usually C drive).

From the menu select "Properties". This will show you how big your Hard Drive is, and how much space has already been used.

Just under the pie chart you should see the "Disk Cleanup" button. Click this and follow the on screen instructions.

When it asks what you want to cleanup I'd usually say everything. But if you want to pick and chose then I strongly recommend the Recycle bin, as this is files you've deleted previously anyway.

Any problems, and please come back to us.

Tubthumper posted on Disk cleanup??? in Slow Computer

Disk cleanups are a useful little tool that make it easy for you to get shot of old documents, processes that aren't needed, dead links, temporary internet files, cache, cookies, everything that clogs up the arteries of your computer, without having to do them all individually yourself. I tend to use C Cleaner which I found on download.com

Download it, open it and it will show you what areas it will look in, items it will look at and what it thinks it can safely clear without harming your computer. you can select and deselect these areas as you wish, I tend to keep temporary internet files simply because I'm lazy and don't like losing all my saved passwords ;-)

I've just run it my self and it has cleared 93mb in 28 seconds.
